Gynecomastia is one of the most common causes for male chest surgery in young adults. It is increase in size of chest as a result of some sort of metabolic or endocrine imbalance. It can affect one breast or both breasts.

There are many causes like endocrine, physiological and some liver disease related. Most commonly, puberty onset gynecomastia is the most common cause. Some medicines like Cimetidine, steroids, and other drugs also cause gynecomastia.
Most teenage boys may experience some degree of breast enlargement which can affect one or both sides. By early adulthood less than 10% have a enlarged size of breast causing concern. As the person grows old, rises with age, and as many as 30% (1 in 3) in older men can complain of this problem. Rarely, there are chances that breast enlargement can be caused by medicines (such as for high blood pressure, ischemic heart disease and CA prostate), some diseases (such as liver failure and some cancers).
Usually the diagnosis is clinical. Liver function tests and some other tests can be performed to rule out other problems.
In case of mild gynecomastia, advice on lifestyle habits such as proper diet and exercise with reassurance can be helpful, but in more severe cases, medical treatmeant is required, perhaps including surgical intervention Many treatments are available for this problem. Generally, liposuction can be used to treat majority of the cases. Sometimes liposuction can be combined with surgery to make the chest aesthetically attractive.
When the amount of breast tissue is more, we may have to give a small cut take out the gland. But usually the scar is inconspicuous. Most of the operations for gynecomastia take about one to two hours to complete and are done under general anesthesia, or in some cases, under local anesthesia with sedation.
If the male chest surgery is done under General anesthesia, you would stay in the hospital for one day, and if under local anesthesia, you would be discharged the same day. After the surgery, the chest is swollen and bruised for a few days to 2 weeks. To help reduce swelling, patients are instructed to wear an elastic pressure garment continuously for 3 to 6 weeks. During this period, massage of the operated site helps reduce the swelling and pain. It is advisable to refrain from exercise for about two weeks. The initial results appear after about six weeks and the swelling keeps on reducing till 3 to 6 months.
The potential complications of gynecomastia surgery are relatively rare. They include pain, bleeding and infection as with other surgical procedures. Sometimes, small amount of breast of residual tissue may remain which may require further surgery. Very rarely, contour to the chest may become asymmetrical and there may be reduced nipple sensation for an initial 3 to 6 months after surgery.
Once a successful gynecomastia surgery is performed, the results are permanent and most patients don’t develop it again unless there is massive weight gain or some serious medical illness. Most of our clients are happy with the results of this procedure.
